Laptop Hard Disk Repairs

One of the most common faults on a laptop is a hard disk problem. A hard disk is similar to a CD ROM only its more dense. It can hold many more files than a CD. Look at the image below on the right is your standard DVD. To the left is a laptop hard drive that we have opened up, to show what's inside. As you can see its half the size of the DVD. The DVD is 4.3 Gb and the hard disk holds 500 Gb. That's a big difference right? The hard disk holds all your files like a large cupboard to put things in. if you had a spot of dust on a DVD the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence, there maybe some information that could be lost. Imagine when the hard disk has dust and the laser arm inside the hard disk cannot read it, imagine how much data is lost now, im sure you will undersdtand its a lot more. Hard disks spin very fast the spin at 5000-7000 revolutions per minute. They are the main moving parts inside a laptop, hence they can be the first problem when a laptop cannot boot to windows.

Hard Disk CD

The Image below is the disk platter a laser diode moves across the surface of the disk reading the data. Sometimes a hard drive makes a noise. It starts to make a ticking noise. This is usually bad news. Very often when this happens its very difficult to get your data back. That's because the motor driven spindle is spinning the disk but the actuator arm does not move across the platter to read the data. The data is read from the disk by detecting the transitions in magnetization and decoding the originally written data. The software interprets the data to you.

Hard Disk Error

Below is the different parts of a hard disk. Top left is the motherboard for the hard disk. Sometimes this stops working, if you can get exactly the same motherboard, there is a chance you can get the data back. On the right is a Sata hard disk. These are the modern type of hard disk used in most computers and laptops. Below right are the older hard drive type typically IDE hard disk drives. At the bottom is a hard disk that is used in very small sony laptops and some camcorders and other small devices.

Hard Disks

The image below is of a standard hard disk. When your hard disk is broken you can purchase another hard disk. Don't worry to much about the make or model however we have found that Seagate and Hitachi are very good. Highlighted below is the make of the had disk. Below that is the model number and the speed of the hard disk in revolutions per minute. Below and to the left is the size of the hard disk. If your hard disk is broken we can sell you a hard disk install it and reload the system for you. Give us a call for free advice.
